welcome to anne elliott

Anne Elliott’s abiding subject is landscape. She addresses the visual presence and the emotional experience of compelling landscapes and how each informs the other.

Her recent work was inspired by two locations in China: - the cluster of peaks called Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) and the numerous Magao Caves at Dunhuang, a city on the Silk Road.

Elliott assembles her three-dimensional drawings from Okawara rice paper that she have previously stained with acrylic paint to suggest rock surfaces. The compositions evolve through the manipulation of the paper. Frequently she draws on them or adds papers, fabrics, wire or printed images. This results in very rich and textured surfaces. The folding and the crumpling give the pieces volume and a physical presence that invites intimacy. These landscapes are not illusionist or trompe d’oeil. They are about rock and the feelings evoked by climbing rock, carving rock, knowing the rock inside and out.
